Family doctors are trained to evaluate cases, initiate therapeutics and forward to specialists in oncology, highlighted Maria Caridad Rubio, head of the independent section for cancer control of the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba (MINSAP).
Even, she noted at a press conference, «procedures such as breast exams and cytological tests are carried out in medical offices, through which apparently healthy people have discovered they are sick.»
The specialist reported that in Cuba there are currently 42 medical oncology, nine oncopediatric, 25 nuclear medicine and nine radio therapy services; in addition to two third level institutions (National Institute of Oncology and Radiobiology and the Hermanos Amejeiras Hospital, both in the capital).
Regarding the World Day for the fight against cancer, Rubio expressed that to commemorate it, an event will be held on Cuba from February 4 to 21, which will begin with an educational-recreational festival in the capital Parque Cordova where information will be provided on risk factors and the importance of self-care as prevention.
Rubio underscored that in Cuba the highest incidence occurs in skin cancer; however, this type is not considered deadly unlike lung cancer that causes more deaths in both sexes.
Among the risk factors for the Cuban population, the specialist highlighted age and inheritance (non-modifiable) as the most deadly factors, as well as alcohol, tobacco and obesity consumption.
