In this sense, the Cuban politician and writer pointed out that capitalism is far from being defeated as a consequence of the crisis generated by the greatest health catastrophe of the century.
Prieto noted that the Covid-19 pandemic brought to light the genocidal character of neoliberalism and the «silent genocide» perpetrated for decades by the capitalist system.
The president of the Casa de las Americas rejected the myth that the pandemic makes no distinction between ideology and social classes; the disease is not the same for a millionaire as for the homeless, he said.
He warned about the need to work from the network of intellectuals and progressive social movements to weave an anti-fascist front in the face of the proliferation of practices associated with the Malthusian doctrine, which resorts to epidemics, wars and famine as a mechanism of population control.
Faced with this scenario, the island’s intellectual called to raise class consciousness. «The left has to be united beyond unnecessary protagonisms and discrepancies,» he stressed.
The purpose of the virtual forum was to reflect on the multiple impact and repercussion of the health crisis on the economy, politics and culture from a unitary and inclusive perspective.
