Ecuadorian Court suspends bribery trial against Correa

Quito, Feb 13 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s National Court of Justice suspended yesterday the trial hearing against former president Rafael Correa, former vice president Jorge Glas and 19 other people involved in the Bribes Case.

The Court disrupted the process after setting for tomorrow February 14, the challenge posed by Correa’s legal team against the judges of the court attending the case.

According to the decision, everything will be paralyzed until the defense request is resolved; lawyers in charge of this trial are not competent to hear the cause.

The lawyers against whom the challenge was posed are Ivan Leon, Ivan Saquicela and Marco Rodriguez.

The ratification of the court or its change depends on the diligence of next Friday.

The Bribes Case emerged as part of an investigation of an alleged plot through which contractors provided funds for proselytizing activities of the PAIS Alliance Movement in the period 2021-2016.

In that context, those involved are prosecuted for the alleged crime of bribery, which they reject.

From the beginning, the former president affirmed that the inquiry is part of the political persecution unleashed against him and former officials of his government.

Correa also called it a great farce, aimed at disabling him politically, when there is just a year left for 2021 general elections.

Numerous organizations support the former ruler, whom they consider to be the main architect of the Blooming Decade (2007-2017), during his administration and during which the country registered significant advances in economic and social issues.
