Venezuela denounces provocation by US Southern Command

Caracas, Jul 16 (Prensa Latina) Venezuela on Thursday denounced the provocation by the United States Southern Command on Thursday, after the incursion of the ship USS Pinckney (DDG-91) just 16.1 nautical miles (30 kilometers) off the country's coast.

In a communiqué issued by the Foreign Ministry, the Government rejected the statements by the US military, which said that Venezuela is exercising «excessive control» over its jurisdictional waters.

In that regard, Caracas underlined that the furtive incursion of the US vessel in Venezuelan jurisdictional waters violates International Maritime Law and can only be described as an act of provocation.

Such actions are carried out as a result of the recent visit by President Donald Trump to the military command in the state of Florida, «in his desperate campaign to catch the Latin vote in that state in exchange for permanent and illegal aggressions against Venezuela,» the Foreign Ministry added.

«Venezuela’s institutions and especially the Bolivarian National Armed Force will enforce the sacred sovereignty and territorial integrity of Venezuela at all cost in tune with international law,» the communiqué stressed.
