In a call, figures such as the Nobel Prizes Adolfo Perez Esquivel (Argentina), Rigoberta Menchu (Guatemala) and Jody Williams (Ireland), denounce that the US threatens to directly invade Venezuela or in «support» of a bloody coup d’état that it would be under US direction, which will also have warlike derivations against other countries, such as Cuba and Nicaragua.
In the document, signed by over 100 personalities who support the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for stopping all ongoing military action on the planet and join efforts for the establishment of peace and fighting against Covid-19 disease.
The signatories demand ‘urgent action from all the governments worldwide in the face of this threat against the survival of humanity to stop any warlike conflict that would only aggravate the dramatic situation of health, poverty, inequality and injustice that has become evident with this pandemic.’
Meanwhile, figures such as Nora Cortiñas, Stella Calloni and Atilio Boron (Argentina), Fernando Buen Abad (Mexico), Federico Mayor (Spain) and Hernando Calvo Ospina (Colombia) stress that in the face of Covid-19 pandemic that has no borders nor ideological selection, they reject all acts of violence and persecution of some countries against others.
Consequently, they urge to immediately lift unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran, Syria, Palestine, Zimbabwe and others, so that, once the pandemic is over, we can meet in peace and rebuild together a new international order grounded in justice, dignity, international law and humanitarian values, the document underscores.
