UN: Israeli annexation plans are a growing threat

United Nations, April 23 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations’ special envoy to the Middle East warned Israel Thursday against applying sovereignty to parts of Judea and Samaria, joining the European Union’s foreign affairs chief in urging the Jewish state not to alter the status quo in Judea and Samaria.

Speaking in a video conference with the UN Security Council, the envoy said Israeli annexation of Palestine would be a “devastating blow” to the two-state solution, AFP reported.

It would also close the door to a renewal of negotiations, and threaten efforts to advance regional peace, he stressed.

Although last month we saw some examples of cooperation between Israel and Palestine to fight ace the common threat of Covid-19, clashes continue and the human balance of this conflict increases, Mladenov regretted.

This health crisis can create new opportunities to advance cooperation between both parties, he considered and called to avoid deterioration in the political context.

With the support of the United Nations, the two sides are coordinating efforts to address the spread of the new coronavirus, but much more can and should be done, he told members of the Security Council.
