China stresses stance on sensitive issues in relations with US

Beijing, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) Yang Jiechi, director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Communist Party of China, stressed to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo his country's stance on Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang, which are considered the most sensitive issues in bilateral relations.

According to a communiqué issued on Thursday, the parties discussed those issues on Tuesday and Wednesday in Hawaii, during a meeting that Beijing described as constructive.

Yang noted that cooperation based on mutual respect, shared benefits and non-confrontation is the best tool in relations between the two powers, but at the same time, he repeated the relevance of protecting sovereignty, security and development interests.

In that context, the Chinese official noted the One-China principle regarding Taiwan, and demanded that the White House respect it, as well as the three joint communiqués signed by the two governments.

Regarding Hong Kong, Yang pointed out that the decision to approve a national security act, which Beijing is determined to enforce, is a purely domestic affair.

He rejected a communiqué from the G-7 foreign ministers and called to interpret the law with objectivity and without any interference.

Finally, Yang assured that thanks to the antiterrorist plan implemented in the Uygur autonomous region of Xinjiang, security has improved, as well as the standards of living, health and economic development of all ethnic groups in that zone.

«We demand that the United States respect China’s efforts in the antiterrorist fight and against radicalization, and stop applying double standards and using Xinjiang affairs as a pretext to interfere in internal affairs,» he stressed.
