China pardoned debt payments to 23 poor countries

Beijing, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) China reported today that it pardoned debt payments to 23 countries, as part of a G-20 initiative promoted to help poor nations amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Finance Minister Liu Kun, the figure amounts to 1.353 billion dollars and another 748 million were frozen by the Development Bank.

In addition, he reiterated Beijing’s willingness to provide more financial assistance to the states most affected by the pandemic and to prioritize them in the supply of the vaccine.

Last June, the president of China, Xi Jinping, announced the cancellation of the debt of some African countries, which were contracted in the form of interest-free loans with his government and were due to be paid at the end of this year.

As he specified then, the benefit would be obtained by nations of that continent seriously impacted and with greater financial difficulties due to Covid-19.

Xi pledged to work with the international community to agree on other avenues of support, encourage the institutions of the Asian giant to freeze debt, and hold consultations with African territories based on market principles.

He also mentioned plans to provide more assistance, supplies and experts in the fight against the pandemic, to continue the construction of the African Union headquarters and several hospitals in that region.
