It became known on Thursday that the minister presented his resignation to President Sebastian Piñera during a telephone conversation with him.
Speculations regarding the departure of Desbordes had been increasing in the weeks before, but they pointed out first that it would be in March 2021, then they moved it to January and finally began to qualify it as imminent.
According to comments, the decision responds to his interest and that of a large part of the militants of the right-wing National Renovation Party, as a result of a possible candidacy for the presidency of that political organization in the elections that will be held next year.
Likewise, the National Renovation Party is evaluating the figure of Desbordes, who was the Minister of Defense just five months ago, as one of the safest cards to play by the party with a view to the presidential elections scheduled for the end of 2021.
However, Desbordes’ departure does not seem to be the only one expected in the coming days, since it would force Piñera, who is at the lowest point of popular support with just seven percent approval, to carry out a more extensive renovation in his cabinet.
In La Moneda, the National Congress and in the circles of the ruling and opposition parties there is talk of the possible resignation of ministers Andres Couve, of Sciences; Carolina Schmidt, of Environment; Cecilia Perez, of Sports, and Karla Rubilar, from Social Development.
