The IAAF, ruling body of athletics has decided to postpone for 2021 the contest that was to take place in Nanjing, due to the propagation of the sickness in China.
The body’s medical council, in close relation with the World Health Organization, advised the IAAF not to celebrate the event as planned, between March 13th and 15th this year, due to the current dangers of contracting the virus in China.
One of the variants considered was having as host another country, but the potential expansion of the virus made impractical this possibility as well.
The entity issued a statement regretting the decision, but holds it was necessary in the name of offering safety to its officials and athletes, and thanked all those cities that were in condition of hosting the event.
