Public access at UN closed due to COVID-19

United Nations, Mar 10 (Prensa Latina) As precautionary measure against COVID-19 outbreak, the UN Secretariat Building in New York on Tuesday closed its access to public in general and also called off guided tours until further notice.

According to the UN Secretary-General Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, this measure has being taken following the decision to reduce the number of working staff presents in the UN Secretariat Building.

¨As Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, health and safety of UN personnel is one of his top priorities and concerns,¨ Dujarric added. ¨The UN will continue monitoring the present situation closely, where extra action can be taken to the extent that circumstances evolve,¨ he said.

¨No COVID-19 case has so far been reported among UN personnel.¨

Diplomatic sources indicated that the UN authorities are currently analyzing the risks that may be deeply involved in holding high-level events slated for this year.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that COVID-19 is moving closer towards being declared as an outbreak, after being detected in over 100 nations and surpassed 100,000 infections.

Tedros Adhanom, WHO director-general said «the threat of an outbreak has become too real» and it is worrying so many nations have been affected so quickly.
