Cuban representatives before the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) made that statement.
On behalf of the Cuban Embassy in Canada, the instrument to ratify the 2014 Montreal Protocol, which modifies the 1963 Tokyo Convention, was deposited at the ICAO Office of Legal Affairs and Foreign Relations.
The new protocol deals about the growing problem of incidents related to unsubordinated and disturbing conducts on board of a plane, and significantly improves the States’ capacity to expand their jurisdiction on infractions and acts pertinent to the «landing State» and the «State of Operator».
It also reinforces the provisions of security of world aviation by expressly extending the juridical recognition and protection of security officials on board.
The Montreal Protocol came into force on January 1, 2020, when the 22nd instrument of ratification required was deposited, in this case by Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the instrument ratified by Cuba is the 25th, of a total of 193 ICAO member States.
Cuba’s representatives at the ICAO thanked all those who contributed to sending the instrument of ratification to the headquarters of the organization, in Montreal, despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
