CEN President Alina Balseiro reported that work has been ongoing since December to organize the process in which delegates to Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power will vote.
She noted the training of electoral authorities and the preparation of the required documentation, including complementary norms and ballot papers.
Some 3,000 officials will participate in the elections, for which the computer system is also being readied, the daily Granma reported.
The candidates for governor and deputy governor, figures established in the new Constitution approved in April last year, are nominated by the President of the Republic Miguel Díaz-Canel.
As part of the transformations to the Cuban political system enshrined in the new constitutional text, the current provincial assemblies will cease to exist.
Balseiro revealed that a dynamic test (mock election) will be conducted by provincial electoral councils in all municipalities of the country on Sunday, January 12.
In her opinion, the fact that delegates to municipal assemblies, nominated and directly elected by the people, will elect the governors and deputy governors is «a strength and expression of our democracy.»
