The open Africa threshold for Latin America

Rabat, Feb 28 (Prensa Latina) Known as the threshold of Africa, Morocco is projected strongly towards Latin America through a Cultural Association composed of intellectuals and academics interested in an opening towards the Latin American region.

Its objective is to achieve greater knowledge about that part of the world as a condition to increase friendship and collaboration between this Arab country and that area beyond the Atlantic.

The association was founded in February 2018, in Tangier, an important city in northern Morocco, «because there was no cultural organ or entity that made known what the culture, literature and history of Latin American countries is».

This was explained to Prensa Latina by the Hispanic and researcher Randa Jebrouni, for whom the development of “a cultural diplomacy” that allows the rapprochement and reinforcement of the links between both parties is of the greatest importance.

The idea came true when that specialist, current head of the entity, was invited by the academy of the Kingdom of Morocco, in Rabat, to several conferences in which personalities dedicated specifically to Latin America participated.

It was an opening to the countries of Latin America, to devote ourselves exclusively to the history and culture of that region, which is to say everything”, said the author of the book Letter and City, Tangier in the current Spanish and Moroccan literatures

That city is the scene of numerous activities in Spanish and about Hispanic culture in general, «but I did not have an entity dedicated to friendship between Morocco and Latin America in Arabic or Spanish».

In its two years of work the association established relations with a group of friendship and solidarity in France and with the foundation of the Cuban painter based in Paris Lorenzo Padilla.

That artist owns a work linked to Africa, to the point of donating a collection of African Art to the Museum of Art of the city of Matanzas, in the west of the Caribbean island.

The sample is considered one of the largest repertoires of the African cultural heritage in the Latin American continent and is made up of 309 pieces from fourteen countries and 72 ethnicities.

One of the values of the association’s work is in the discovery of links between the two geographical regions.

An example: the cross stitch in the seam arrived in Mexico from Morocco through the expeditions of ships leaving Spain with Moroccan Moors, Jebrouni revealed.

Similarly, there are studies on cooking recipes that exist in this African country and in Peru, the researcher added.

“That is why it is important to work the cultural field. There is much that links Latin America with Morocco. Here we have a large number of Hispanic and Hispanic departments in universities that do a great job of cultural diplomacy”.

“And that link is essential, it is the Spanish language that unites us. Morocco is a very important country in the African continent and enjoys that strategic place that is the threshold towards this world and culture so millenary ”.

Among the most recent actions of the association is a tribute to the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, when the 167th anniversary of his birth «to highlight the Arab footprint in the great Cuban thinker and writer».

The event was attended by ambassador of the island in Morocco, Javier Domokos, who has just presented his credentials to King Mohamed VI, after a period of distancing between the two countries.
