His wish was expressed during an intervention in the framework of the Fifth Meeting of the Puebla Group: Union is Change, where peace, economy and the pandemic were discussed.
According to the former president, what is happening today is very serious and will overcome, on a planetary level, the crisis of 1929 (Great Depression), with severe economic damage in the United States and countries in Europe and other areas.
«We are facing the most serious emergency of the last century and in the case of Ecuador, it is the most serious in history,» he said.
In this sense, he warned that there are no miraculous solutions, the cost could be paid by those who have the most, which is a political decision, but in his country it is happening otherwise: «the government wants the cost to be paid by the poorest ones.»
Regarding the world after the Covid-19 pandemic, he first warned that what has been experienced globally largely vindicates the principles of the left and of progressivism, as well as the relevance of collective action and the role of the State.
«There are things so important that they cannot be left to the spontaneity of the market,» he assured after stressing that access to health cannot be considered just another commodity.
Finally, he insisted on his hope that once this stage is over, there is a planet in which groups such as the Puebla Group and political tendencies such as progressivism have much to say.
