Under the title «Recovering better: economic and social challenges and opportunities», the report analyses the economic trends critical to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and post-pandemic reconstruction.
UN Under-Secretary-General Amina Mohammed warned that up to 100 million people may return to extreme poverty by 2020, the first global increase since 1998, according to multilateral agency estimates.
She stressed that there is an urgent need for everyone to help rebuild economies in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
The ideas contained in this recent compilation point the way with approaches that echo the call by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for shared responsibility and global solidarity in responding to the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, Mohammed said.
She also recalled that Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development remains the agreed framework for recovery to accelerate progress on climate change, poverty and gender inequality, and to address the fragilities exposed or exacerbated by the health crisis.
