Reporting the results of an investigation into the ophthalmologist’s death, the National Supervision Commission considered it «improper implementation of the law» that the police reprimanded him, along with seven other individuals, on the grounds of spreading false news on the Internet.
It ordered the cancellation of the warning letter signed by Li and the sanctioning of the officers involved in the case, which remains open.
It also reviewed the treatment given to the doctor after he contracted the respiratory condition that caused his death on Feb. 7.
According to the hospital, Li died as a result of the complications of Covid-19 and after his heart stopped beating, several intensive care therapies were applied but proved unsuccessful.
His death caused great commotion inside and outside China, millions of Internet users invaded social networks with comments of regret and admiration, and even the World Health Organization expressed condolences.
«We all need to praise the work he did on the (pathogenic) 2019nCoV,» the international agency added then on its Twitter account.
Li Wenliang warned on December 30th in a group of the popular social network Weibo – the Chinese twitter – that seven patients tested positive for SARS, an acute respiratory syndrome that killed more than 800 people in 2003.
Four days later he was cited by police, on Jan. 10 he began showing symptoms of the deadly coronavirus, and on Feb. 1 he wrote that he was finally confirmed as a Covid-19 case.
