«We will start the debate this week,» Maia confirmed to Estadão de Sao Paulo daily.
Object of controversy and criticism from President Jair Bolsonaro, the initiative was approved by the Senate on June 30 and proposes an unprecedented milestone in the regulation of the use of social networks, creating the so-called Brazilian Law of Freedom, Responsibility and Transparency on the Internet.
The far-right leader, who makes frequent use of social networks to conduct politics and contact his supporters, promised to veto the measure.
This proposal forces digital platforms to adopt a higher level of control in the dissemination of fake news on the Internet, by having to apply, for example, an authentication of all profiles on social networks and limit the ability to spread the same message.
Technology companies are against the project.
Maia defended the proposal on Saturday and said that the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court (STF), constant targets of attacks by Bolsonaro’s followers, are affected by false news and it is necessary to address this situation.
