As announced by the senior official of the European Union (EU), Dublin will have to nominate a man and a woman, and the one who is elected will not necessarily assume the Commerce portfolio, as there will probably be changes in the community government.
While the replacement process goes on, the responsibility of the outgoing commissioner will be assumed by the economic vice-president of the Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis.

When communicating his resignation, he indicated that the controversy over his actions was a distraction for his work as a commissioner, so he accepted his mistakes and decided to leave his post.
The President of the Commission warmly thanked the Irish politician’s work in the current mandate as Trade Commissioner and in the previous one in charge of the Agriculture portfolio.
However, she emphasized that when Europe demands from citizens sacrifices and painful restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, «the members of the European Executive are expected to be especially vigilant in complying with national and regional regulations.»
