The situation derives from the increase in cases of respiratory disease throughout the country, whose special and intensive care units are at 95 percent capacity.
In the case of Quito, the capital, and the epicenter of the pandemic for months, there are even hospitals where there is already a waiting list for patients, such as that of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security of the South, where, according to the manager, Danilo Calderon, 15 people are waiting for a bed in intensive care.
According to the information, in Guayaquil, the second city with the largest population in the country, rooms are also almost full, just like other locations.
The fear of government authorities and health care centers is that there will be an increase in cases in the first days of January as a result of the Christmas and New Year celebrations, despite the restrictions in place to prevent the spread of the disease.
Faced with this situation, calls continue to the population to take extreme measures such as the mandatory use of masks, frequent hand washing and physical distancing.
Since last February 29th, when the first case was reported in Ecuador and until last Tuesday, 210,236 people have been confirmed with the disease via PCR test.
