Last season, more than 200 whales were spotted and about 24 calves born, the Environment Ministry informed.
Every year, hundreds of whales arrive in the Dominican Republic’s north coast to mate or give birth to their young in the warm waters of the Atlantic. The season extends until March 30 in Samana Bay, and until April 15 at the Banks of La Plata and Navidad.
During the months of spring, summer and autumn, the whales live in the cold waters of the North Atlantic and in winter, they begin a long journey to the tropical seas to mate and give birth and then return to their feeding area.
Humpback whales are up to 16 meters long and weigh approximately 36,000 kilograms. There are an estimated 80,000 humpback whales today, which can be commonly observeed in breeding areas off the coast of Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, the United States, Peru, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
