Ferrari, a renowned scientist and researcher, assumed the position on January 1, 2020 and only three months later resigned due to his disagreement with the measures applied by the European Union (EU) to fight against Covid-19 disease.
In a statement sent to the press, Ferrari specified that its decision was because of the failure of his efforts to get the EU to accept proposals, such as the implementation of a large-scale scientific program to combat the novel coronavirus.
«I am deeply disappointed at the European response to Covid-19 pandemic. I came to the Scientific Committee of the bloc as a fervent follower of the EU, but this crisis totally changed my points of view, although I continue supporting the ideals of international collaboration with enthusiasm,” noted the Italian-American expert.
He also criticized «the complete lack of coordination of health policies among the Member States, the recurring opposition to financial cohesion initiatives and the general closure of borders.»
Meanwhile, the Council regretted the controversy generated by the resignation of its president and noted that on March 27, 29 its members requested Ferrari’s resignation, considering that it did not have a correct appreciation of the center’s essence, he was absent in key meetings and promoted initiatives in a personal capacity.
In addition, the professor of Mathematics, Engineering and Medicine assured that he lost faith in the system in the midst of a situation that requires committed and decisive actions.
After what happened, the EU directive announced that a committee is analyzing proposals for his replacement.
