PLO against Israel’s plan to expand settlements on Palestinian land

Ramallah, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) once again lashed out at Israeli plans to build thousands of settlements in East Jerusalem, which it is considered as part of a permanent occupation agenda.

With such settlements, Israel is giving a final blow to the viability of the formula of two states to solve the conflict between both parties and leaves no doubt about its occupation agenda permanently, the PLO insisted in a statement published on Tuesday by the Wafa agency.

Late in January, the U.S. President Donald Trump submitted the controversial Deal of the Century, which grants the Palestinians limited autonomy within a discontinuous homeland in areas of the nearly uninhabitable Gaza Strip and the equally besieged West Bank.

The promulgation of the plan that leaves the Jordan Valley in Tel Aviv’s hands and proclaims Jerusalem as the indivisible capital of Israel was seconded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements on the construction of more settlements (for settlers) in that city, sacred as well for the other party that claims sovereignty over its eastern portion.

In addition to the neighborhoods in Givat HaMatos and Har Horma, Israel is planning to construct about 9,000 houses north of the city, on the land of an old airport.

Backed up by the United States, Israel unilaterally and illegally appropriates the Palestinian territory and tramples on the basic rights of these people, according to a message sent by Hanan Ashrawi, member of the PLO Executive Committee.

«It is time to recognize the painful truth, the response of the international community to these systematic abuses has been simply shameful, when issuing hollow statements of verbal opposition,» she said.

The Palestinians seek support to curb the implementation of the so-called «Deal of the Century» and force Tel Aviv to respect the previous settlement proposals covered by the United Nations Organization (UN) and based on the solution of two states with the pre-1967 borders.

Previous projects to overcome the conflict were conceived around parameters contained in UN Security Council resolutions on the thorniest issues: borders, Jerusalem, refugees.
