Peru: Bishops urge to avoid chaos amid political crisis

Lima, Sep 16 (Prensa Latina) The Peruvian Episcopal Conference on Wednesday urged to avoid chaos and disunity amid serious political crisis, 48 hours after Congress completes the removal process of President Martin Vizcarra.

«This is not the time for chaos and division, when the priority is to fight the Covid-19 pandemic together, and face health, social, economic, educational and political crisis in solidarity, thus cracking down on corruption and getting ready to post-pandemic,» Peruvian Episcopal Conference said.

The text referred to the context of persistent coronavirus crisis and its serious economic and social aftermath, which includes the loss of millions of jobs, thus remarking there will be general elections in seven months.

For religious people, in such a situation «our fragile democracy should not be weakened, nor its institutionality, so any act that goes against the law must be sanctioned in due course and the corresponding authority must submit to due process in the investigation stage.»

Congress President, Manuel Merino, and opposition launched the removal process of Vizcarra for «permanent moral incapacity» whose culmination is scheduled on Friday.
