It can be appreciated in the scope of the agreements reached during the Russian foreign minister’s first visit to Mexico since 2010, thus ratifying the solid and diversified foreign policy of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The talks, although held at closed doors and without much media coverage, show the two governments’ interest in keeping a dynamic and open dialogue on bilateral and global issues, as well as on promoting economic relations and cooperation in several sectors.
Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and Lavrov agreed on the importance of generating understanding between the two countries, given their international projection and the role they play in the United Nations System and other formats like the G20 and the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Forum.
Lavrov’s visit contributed to ratifying the Mexican Government’s role as an active promoter of multilateralism, convinced of the importance of dialogue among all States to build consensus and peacefully solve disputes.
In that regard, the two diplomats agreed on the need to keep close communication due to Mexico’s probable participation, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2021-2022, for which Russia has committed its support for the United Nations.
