Speaking at the Summit of Heads of State of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and Associated States, which for the first time in its history was held virtually because of the pandemic, the president insisted – as he has been doing for months – on the need to integrate ourselves into a single nation at the regional level.
«Thinking about Mercosur means understanding that we are absolutely obliged to seek a common destiny because the people demand that we do so», said the president, who added that Latin America, by origin and by destiny, is called to be a unique and absolutely integrated region.
iiDuring his speech, Fernandez stressed that unfortunately Latin America is the most unequal continent in terms of income distribution and must face that challenge today in the midst of the greatest global crisis.
iiFrom his residence in Olivos, where he carries out his functions, he asked the members of Mercosur to work together more than ever to take on «the challenge of building a more balanced world and to begin to put an end to the inequality that hurts Latin America every day».
The virtual summit was attended by the presidents of the States members of the bloc, Mario Abdo Benitez (Paraguay), Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil), and Luis Lacalle Pou (Uruguay), as well as States representatives from Chile, Bolivia and Colombia, among other high ranking officials.
At the meeting, Paraguay handed over the pro tempore presidency for the next six months to Uruguay.
