Panama with 17 fatalities due to flooding

Panama, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) As a result of flooding in Panama, 17 people have died, 62 others have disappeared and 168 remain isolated and cut off from communication, the government announced today.

The human damage, which was concentrated in rural communities and small communities, was mixed with the partial or total loss of a number of homes not yet specified, while 3,332 people were affected, many of whom were rescued from the danger of strong currents, which affected the country since last week, the source reported.

The Security Minister, Juan Pino submitted the report, an institution that heads the task force created for rescue operations, the movement of citizens to safe places and the supply of water, food and basic necessities to those in need, who mostly reside in indigenous areas. With barely multiple forces try to reach by air or land the 20 areas that were flooded, the rains continued in the west of the country and meteorologists predict that weather conditions will favor the development of another storm in the next five days, in the central Caribbean, near the Panamanian coast.

Last Saturday, the National Government declared a State of Environmental Emergency for those seven provinces and the indigenous region, and allocated $100 million to immediately address the difficult situation, which includes agricultural areas, many of which were lost under water.

To this is added the inaccessibility or difficult communication of the affected areas, because in 66 places the waters blocked roads and mountain paths, of which only half were repaired, but the humidity of the soils threatens to undermine the roads again.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez lamented yesterday on Twitter the fatal consequences in the sub-region and wrote: «We express our solidarity with the peoples and governments of Mexico and Panama for the loss of human life and material damage caused by Hurricane #Eta. Our condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims».
