Renowned epidemiologists, pneumologists and immunologists come by all means and at every opportunity to warn citizens of the obvious dangers of not wearing the mask in open places, the traditional greetings of kisses, hugs and handshakes, as well as meetings and celebrations.
If frequent hand washing and other hygiene and disinfection measures are added, they argue, the chances of contracting the virus are minimized and the containment of the epidemic by health services is increased and consolidated.
However, the task is not easy, since precisely the report in May of a certain control in the spread of SARS-CoV-2 was misinterpreted to the extent that traditional parties were held, as well as football matches with large crowds and physical contacts.
Only a few days later, the number of consultations increased, more tests were performed than ever before and the upward spiral of new infections has not stopped for at least a month, with the consequent overcrowding of hospitals, an increase in patients connected to mechanical ventilators, as well as an increase in deaths.
Now, when state authorities tried to reinstate some more drastic restrictions, including a Friday-Monday curfew in Belgrade alone, the city most affected by the outbreak, massive street protests took place and none of the protective measures were observed.
To make matters worse, they were manipulated by groups of different extreme political tendencies, causing riots, fires, damage to public and private property, clashes between them and confrontations with the police, resulting in injuries and arrests.
While analysts and observers, as well as the nation’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, and the prime minister, Ana Brnabic, insist that these actions have nothing to do with the epidemic, but rather with political and other frustrations, the Covid-19 does not understand such reasoning and continues to claim victims.
Meanwhile, medical personnel, with signs of exhaustion, watch in alarm how the number of cases is increasing in almost all the country.
